Historical Places of Adana

Historical Places of Adana

You will understand better how you made the right decision by renting a car in Adana after you see the distances between the places to visit. The first place recommended by the locals of Adana for you to see after breakfast is Yılankale, which is about 50 km away. Locals of Adana call the castle, which is located on a hill overlooking the Ceyhan Plain, as Shahmaran Castle. It is said that this name was given to the castle by Evliya Çelebi due to the legend of Shahmaran. Built in the 12th century by the Cilician Armenian King Levon I, the castle had a strategic importance during the Crusades. Archaeologists say that the structure is far ahead of its period due to its elaborate details. Many inscriptions and ruins from Armenians and Byzantines can be seen in the castle, which also includes a chapel.
It may also be interesting to see Sirkeli Mound, which is 25 km away from Yılankale. The most impressive part of the mound is the rock relief depicting the Hittite king Muwatalli (1306-1282 BC) with a long-skirted robe. Muwatalli Relief, which is thought to be the rock relief of the oldest known Hittite king in history, is located on a rock overlooking the Ceyhan River in Sirkeli Village.

Sabancı Central Mosque, one of the magnificent examples of modern Islamic architecture, should be your first stop in the city center. The mosque with six minarets, inspired by the Blue Mosque, is one of the largest religious buildings in the Middle East.

People of Adana call the St. Paul Church, which was built in the 19th century, as Bebekli Church. The reason for this is that they think that the 2.5-meter statue of Virgin Mary on the roof resembles a baby. Armenians built the church, which is used by Catholic and Protestant communities today. This unique building is an important part of Adana's multicultural identity.

After seeing the church, you can go to Stone Bridge, one of the city's symbolic structures. The historical bridge belonging to the Hittites was rebuilt by the Romans with stones. According to the people of Adana, you must go to this bridge and watch Seyhan river to fully experience the city.
